What do you like most about summer?

There’s something quietly magical about summer in the UK.  It’s the season when the pace of life naturally seems to slow down. With longer daylight hours, we have more time to enjoy the day without feeling rushed. The extra light invites us to get outside, to relax a little more, and to stretch out simple pleasures into something special. It’s a season of welcomed time off and open-air festivals, when routines soften and everyday life loosens into something freer and lighter.  We shed our protective layers and feel the warmth on our skin.

When sunshine blesses us, it lifts not just our mood but our well-being too. Bright light encourages the brain to release serotonin, known for easing anxiety and brightening our outlook. And with every sunbeam that touches our skin, we produce vitamin D – vital for strong bones, healthy teeth, and muscles that carry us into adventures.

Summer is a season where nature truly flourishes – and tuning into its rhythm can offer simple but powerful boosts to our wellbeing. From wildflowers bursting into bloom along footpaths to the early morning bird chorus that greets the sun, the natural world becomes a source of joy and grounding.

🌞 Mindful Tip:
Step outside for a minute. Let the sun warm your skin and take three deep breaths.

For me, summer always feels like a season of possibility, a time for adventure, for connecting with loved ones, for nurturing plants and encouraging wildlife.

I find such pleasure pottering about in my garden and sitting quietly watching bees hum from flower to flower, working their quiet magic beneath the sun.  I’m lucky to have grasshoppers living in my garden too – curious little creatures who often jump on my hand and stay for a while as if to say hello. Their dry glittering song joins nature’s rhythm to create a delicate timeless summer melody.  There’s something deeply comforting about the warm breeze that carries the scent of lavender and newly ripened strawberries – to me, that’s the smell of summer itself; sweet and familiar like a memory you can breathe in.

🍃 Mindful Tip:
Take a slow walk in your garden or nearest green space.
Focus on what you can hear — the breeze, birdsong, or even distant footsteps. Let sound anchor you to the moment.

Summer evokes cherished memories of my idyllic childhood; spending endless hours playing in cool swimming pools and eating outside on family picnics, ice cream was savoured and fun was had.  I vividly remember revising for my exams, flashcards in hand, while the gentle hum of a lawn mower drifted in on a warm breeze through open windows – a sound forever etched into my memory as the rhythm of summer itself.

Summer In The Forest

One of my favourite ways to spend a summer afternoon is walking through the woods, where leafy canopies cast cool shade and offer a gentle escape from the heat. The air is rich with the earthy scent of pine, and birdsong echoes softly between the trees. I always feel a quiet kind of privilege when I spot a butterfly dancing between wildflowers – a moment to pause and reflect on nature’s beauty.

Living by the coast, I witness the transformation summer brings – the town swells with visitors and the landscape embraces its seasonal rhythm. Children’s laughter twirls on the breeze and the ocean waves lap gently at the shore. Sun-warmed sand cushions bare feet and cradles sandcastles and picnic blankets, while boats bob gently on turquoise waters that sparkle like scattered gems. As evening falls, the sky puts on a show – vivid sunsets melting into clear, starry nights and weekly firework displays light up the night sky with colour and joy.

🌇 Mindful Tip:
As the sun sets, step outside and watch the sky change.
Notice the shifting colours, the cooling air, and the gentle hush as the day winds down. Let each breath slow you into stillness.

Whether you’re taking that first bite of a juicy strawberry, dipping your toes into cool water, or noticing the sound of birdsong, these summer moments invite us to slow down, look closer, and feel the quiet joy that the season brings.

Summer means different things to each of us—and that’s part of its magic. Perhaps it’s staying up a little later, laughing with friends in the garden, or finding stillness in a shady corner of nature.

We’d love to know – What’s your favourite thing about summer? What moments make you smile, slow down, or feel a little more alive?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. Whether it’s a scent, a scene, or a feeling—you never know who your summer joy might inspire.
