This week marks National Tree Week in the UK (22–30 November 2025), the country’s largest annual celebration of trees. It’s a time to reflect on the quiet, steadfast presence of these living giants and the many ways they enrich our lives.
Trees stand tall for decades, even centuries, acting as constants in a changing world. They breathe with us—absorbing the carbon dioxide we exhale and releasing oxygen that sustains life. Their branches and trunks provide homes for countless creatures: birds nesting high above, insects sheltering in bark, and mammals finding refuge in their shade.

Why Trees Matter More Than We Realise
Beyond their towering presence, trees quietly perform extraordinary acts that sustain life all around us.
🌳 Cleaner air: Trees filter pollutants, improving the quality of the air we breathe.
💧 Water guardians: Their roots help prevent flooding, reduce soil erosion, and restore rivers and streams.
🌍 Climate allies: By storing carbon, trees play a vital role in tackling climate change.
🐿️ Wildlife havens: From nectar-rich blossoms for bees to fruits for birds, trees sustain biodiversity.
🤝 Community builders: Planting and caring for trees brings people together, fostering hope and connection.
🌱 Living legacies: Many trees outlive generations, becoming landmarks and storytellers of place and time.

One of my favourite places to wander is the New Forest National Park in Hampshire. Walking through the New Forest in autumn feels like stepping into a painting, with every path lined by shades of amber, copper, and gold. It’s a reminder that trees are not only constants in our environment, but also sources of beauty, history, and life.
🍃 10 Ways to Connect with Trees for Your Wellbeing
Trees are more than silent witnesses to our lives—they are companions, healers, and teachers. Here are ten gentle ways to let them nurture your wellbeing
1. Mindful walks 🚶♀️ Wander slowly beneath branches, paying attention to each step and breath. Let the rhythm of nature steady your thoughts.
2. Listening to birdsong 🐦 Sit beneath a tree and tune into the chorus above. Birdsong has been shown to lift mood and sharpen memory.
3. Tree appreciation 🌲 Pause to touch bark, admire the colours of leaves, or watch branches sway. Simple noticing deepens gratitude.
4. Picnics or reading outdoors 📖 Rest in the shade with a book or meal. Trees offer shelter and serenity, turning ordinary moments into rituals of peace.
5. Community volunteering 🤝 Join local woodland projects. Caring for trees together builds connection and purpose.
6. Creative inspiration 🎨 Sketch, photograph, or write about trees. Creativity flourishes when rooted in nature’s patterns.
7. Planting a tree 🌱 Nurture a sapling and watch it grow. Planting is an act of hope, a gift to future generations.
8. Seasonal noticing 🍂 Observe how trees change—buds in spring, shade in summer, fiery colours in autumn, bare silhouettes in winter. Each season teaches renewal.
9. Forest bathing 🌳 Step quietly among the trees, noticing the rustle of leaves, the scent of earth, and the play of light. This mindful practice calms the nervous system and restores balance.
10. Breathing exercises 🌬️ Practice deep breathing beneath a tree, linking your breath with the oxygen it provides. A reminder of our shared rhythm with nature.
Trees stand tall as constants in our changing world. By spending time with them, we find steadiness, joy, and renewal.
As National Tree Week celebrates its 50th year, millions of trees are being planted across the UK, creating new forests and green spaces for future generations. Each sapling planted today is a promise of cleaner air, thriving wildlife, and a greener tomorrow.
🌿 Let’s take this week to appreciate the trees around us—those standing tall in gardens, parks, and countryside—and perhaps even plant one ourselves.
